I have been helping my boss, the Manager of Corporate Communications, manage internal events, revamp their e-newsletter and strategize the creation of a new Intranet. I've been helping the department on a member station project, calling member stations to update our contact info so that we can better support the folks that are handling media relations, promotions, events and communications. As part of the internship, all of the interns produce a one hour news magazine show, Intern Edition ( http://www.npr.org/about /nextgen/internedition/sum07/ ). The premiere of the show was last Friday. While I didn't report or produce a piece, I handled in internal promotion of the event and I managed the planning and logistics of the event on the premiere day.
Highlights of the internship were having the opportunity to work with all of the wonderful people at NPR, including various show hosts like Robert Siegel, Carl Kasell and Nina Totenberg. Every Wednesday the interns had a brown bag lunch with a senior leader of the organization, for example the Senior VP of Programming, the VP of News and the VP of Digital Media. The four communications interns had lunch with the Communications VP last week and that gave us great insight into the professional life of corporate communications and media relations.
NPR is a great place to have an internship because their treat their interns like equals. They encourage us to meet as many people as possible, email people we are interested in meeting and most people are excited to help teach us everything we need to know about working within a major news organization.
