Off-Campus Federal Work Study (FWS)

Here's a great chance to put your FWS dollars to use for you AND the community! Imagine getting experience in health care services, youth outreach programs, elementary schools, soup kitchens and literacy training programs. You can earn money working in the DC community. And remember, any money you earn from FWS is NOT counted against your need for the next application year, unlike a regular part time job.

Eligibility

If you received FEDERAL WORK STUDY as part of your financial package, then you are eligible to apply for FWS jobs both on and off campus. This award is offered only to those students who complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), demonstrate financial need, and meet all financial aid deadlines.

Possible Off-Campus Opportunities

1.DC Reads

Use your FWS to teach a child to read! DC Reads is an umbrella of collaborative off-campus literacy programs that provide quality tutoring to children in need. It is a joint effort of local American University, its students, the DC Public Schools, and community-based organizations to support literacy in Washington, DC. Training is provided for this popular program. An application and more information about the DC Reads program is available on the Community Service Center web site.

2.Community Service Listings on the HR Website

All FWS job openings are listed on the HR website, including those that are off-campus community service. Click here for the latest postings. You can also look on the AU Career Web under 'Job Postings' by selecting 'Off-Campus Federal Work Study' under the 'Position Type' drop down menu. To apply for these positions, email Francine Blume, Director of Experiential Education, or call 202-885-1806 to confirm your eligibility.

3.Create Your OWN off-campus job!

Want to use your FWS in the community with an organization that you don't see listed? If they are a nonprofit or government organization providing direct service to a local community, we may be able to create a position for you! If you don't have a specific nonprofit in mind but want to get out into DC and use your FWS working for a community-based organization email, Tasha Daniels, Student Employment Coordinator, or call 202-885-1807 to discuss your options.
