About Us
The Peer Advisor Program Overview:
Peer Advisors work as public relations representatives as they promote the Career Center services and resources available to undergraduate students at American University. They present career-related workshops and programs to small and large groups in residence halls, to student clubs and organizations, classrooms and at AU orientation/Preview Days. Presentations focus on Career Center services and resources, resume writing, job and internship search strategies, interviewing, networking techniques, and graduate school preparation. Peer Advisors undergo an intensive training two-day session in late August and receive ongoing professional development and training activities throughout the course of the semester.
Individual and Team Responsibilities:
- Conduct career-related workshops and programs to small and large groups of students in residence halls, to student clubs and organizations, classrooms and at AU Orientation/Preview Day.
- Collaborate with professors, residence assistants and coordinators of AU clubs/ organizations to schedule presentations and workshops
- Communicate daily with other Peer Advisors about scheduling presentations/workshops
- Communicate to the Peer Advisor Manager, a designated Career and/or Internship Advisor on a daily basis
- Meet with designated Career and/or Internship Advisor for bi-weekly supervision
- Complete individual projects designed by oneself and special projects created by CC staff
- Conduct resume critiques in the Career Center library and assist in resume critique sessions with advisors
- Participate in weekly meetings
- Assist with promoting Career Center services at Information tables
- Assist students in the Career Center library and train them on the usage of Career Center online resources and AU CareerWeb
- Keep the library organized, restock books, and answer questions from students
- Create and develop career-related workshop materials for presentations and workshops
Mission Statement
The 2007-2008 Peer Advisors aim to build bridges of communication between the students of American \ University and the Career Center Staff. We will achieve this through a foundation of team work and support within the vision of the Career Center.In order to reach out to our peers we will expose them to Career Center services, resources and technology. To fufill our mission of informing the undergraduate population we will:
- Offer résumé critiques
- Present classroom presentations
- Assist with web technology
- Develop individual and group projects
- Conduct workshops for residents hall and student organizations

The Nitty Gritty of Resume Writing:What is a resume and what am I supposed to have on it? We will go through the facts/myths of resume writing, give your tips on what should be on your resume, quality words and phrases for your resume and review cover letters. Lots of fun and very helpful, even if you’re not currenly applying for a job or internship. Make sure you bring you resume- we’ll do brief critiques at the end!
Your Future Career: Intro to the Career Center- Where is the Career Center? What services do they offer? Who should I ask to speak with? Why should I go there if I’m not a senior? Make sure you bring you resume- we’ll do brief critiques at the end!
Choosing a Major 101: Freshman/ Sophomore/ Confused? You’re not alone! We’ll help you target your personal interests and goals. Make sure you bring you resume- we’ll do brief critiques at the end!
Navigating your Internship and Job Searches: Looking to gain experience in your future career field? Want to get your foot in the door? Learn how to find that internship or job and how to make it work for you. Make sure you bring you resume- we’ll do brief critiques at the end!
These one-hour workshops will be brought to your classroom, meeting, or residence hall.
Classroom Presentations: We also offer 5 minute presentations for professors where we will introduce the Career Center to your students. It is simply quick facts and information with the goal that the students will come to the Career Center and utilize its services.
