Overview

In this program, you will learn the philosophies, methods, and theories of women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Through the study of contemporary scholarship and the historic development of theories of women's inequality and strategies for change, you will examine feminist, gender, and sexuality theory. Offered by the Department of Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies, this 12-credit program encourages and empowers students to confront complex problems and explore interdisciplinary interests. The flexible curriculum teaches students to become critical thinkers, innovative researchers, and skilled communicators. For-credit internship opportunities are available.

The program is designed primarily for students already enrolled in other graduate-degree granting programs at American University. Students who are interested in pursuing solely the WGSS graduate certificate are still welcome to apply after consulting with the current Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies director. Please plan on applying no less than 2 full months before the beginning of the semester to allow for the admissions and enrollment process and careful composition of a course plan that fits your needs.
