Terrorism, Education and Extremism (3). This course examines instances and theories of national, ideological, ethnic, religious, and political extremism and their relationship to education. Students develop a working definition of extremism and then analyze how state authorities, rebel movements, extremist associations, and ethnic and religious organizations mobilize youth populations, shape public narratives, and use, manipulate, or abuse ideologies that lay claim to collective identities during the development and transformation of extremist movements. The course pays particular attention to the ways that educational systems have worked to foment and prevent extremism in comparative, historical, and cross-national contexts, as well as to efforts to combat extremism outside of formal educational systems. The course has a special focus on extremism and hate incidents in U.S. education. Additional case study material includes Germany under Nazism and right-wing extremism in contemporary Germany; child soldiers and education in post-conflict societies; and education and religious extremism. American University Experience II Peer Leadership (3) In this integrative experience course, students acquire leadership skills used to create and deliver seminars, workshops, training sessions, and small group discussions related to diversity, inter-cultural communication, and inclusion. The practical skills gained prepare students to undertake leadership roles on campus and in their communities. The course provides a forum for students to develop, improve, and assess their own their teaching, peer mentorship, and leadership experiences in their American University Experience II course. Using these skills, students are trained to face classroom challenges, especially as they relate to creating a community of learners whose members come from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them a range of experiences and opinions.
