Stereotyping and Prejudice (3) This seminar considers theory and research in social psychology relevant to the formation of stereotypes and all forms of intergroup prejudice. It considers how the findings of experimental research in social psychology shed light on how prejudice forms and might ultimately be reduced, and what the similarities and differences are of prejudice stemming from race, sex, religion, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status (SES), political affiliation, etc. Although there are no easy answers to such complex questions, students review relevant social psychological research on these critical social issues. Research methods and critical thinking are emphasized.

Substance Abuse Disorders: Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention (3) This course provides a review of the current research literature on the development of substance use disorders, their diagnosis, and empirically-supported prevention and treatment strategies. A basic interdisciplinary introduction to child and adolescent development provides the backdrop for understanding the key intersections between multi-level developmental processes and intervention efforts to redirect them toward more adaptive outcomes. Primary source materials are discussed and integrated through written assignments to master developmental systems approaches to the onset, acceleration, stabilization and desistence from substance use problems.
