The Office of Sustainability is hosting the second annual Sustainability Service Day as part of Earth Month 2014 and Campus Beautification Day. We will be working with the National Park Service in a park adjacent to AU's campus to:
Assist on the removal of bamboo debris from the ground in order to plant trees in the future;
Save the park’s mature forest by removing invasive vines from trees.
Date: Tuesday, April 22nd, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m Location: Battery-Kemble section of Rock Creek Park. Meet at the main parking lot off of Chain Bridge Road, NW (directions below). What to Wear: Long pants, long-sleeved shirt, sturdy boots or sneakers, and no sandals. What to Bring: Please bring a water bottle. Tools and gloves will be provided. Bring your own tools and gloves, if you have them. Lunch: At noon we will return to the American University campus to enjoy a free BBQ lunch. Vegetarian options will be provided. T-shirt: All volunteers will receive a free 100% organic cotton Campus Beautification Day t-shirt as a thank you for volunteering that can be worn over the recommended long-sleeve shirt.
Please remember that you can't remove plants in the park on your own. You must have a National Park Service permit or be part of a volunteer group working with Park Service permission. Let us know if you would like information about how to obtain a permit.
