Walktober

WALKTOBER is A healthy U's 6 week fall physical activity challenge. Log steps or minutes of dedicated physical activity online and receive incentives for recording your daily totals. Whether you participate on your own or with a team, we hope you're inspired to boost physical activity levels in October and beyond!

Step Conversions

Your pedometer works whenever you are taking steps.  For activities other than walking, use the Step Conversion Chart posted under Forms on the right hand side of the screen.  Simply find your chosen activity on the chart and multiply the number of steps listed by the number of minutes you participated in the selected activity. 

For the most accurate measure, we suggest removing your pedometer while participating in any non-walking activity.  Simply use the step conversion chart and add the total to your daily step count. 

Registration Info

1.  Choose to participate as an INDIVIDUAL or with a TEAM.

2.  Print and submit the pre-registration form and $10 registration fee.  Checks payable to American University.
*Fee waived for captains of teams with 4 or more people
*Registration fee includes choice of athletic socks or pedometer, incentives, and more.

3.  Once processed, you will receive an email with a link to the official online registration and activity tracking system.  You MUST complete this step to be officially registered for Walktober.

4.  During the online registration process, you will be asked to choose a method of tracking (steps or minutes of dedicated physical activity).  This is the method you will use for the duration of the program.

5.  FOR TEAMS ONLY:  Team formation and team captain selection is completed online via the link provided.  Be prepared to enter a team name at this time.

6.  During the online registration process, be sure to use an email address that you check regularly, as this is where your reminder to track your daily activity will be sent.

7.  Begin recording physical activity on October 1.

Join team AU

Help Team AU win the College Cup!

Compete against George Washington, Georgetown, UDC, Catholic, and George Mason to raise the most funds in support of the American Heart Association for this 3 mile walk on the National Mall (Saturday, November 14). 

Participating is easy!  

  • If you've already formed a team for Walktober, you're halfway there!  Just submit your completed Heart Walk Registration Form with your Walktober materials.  We're looking for 60+ teams of faculty & staff under Team AU.
  • You'll receive an email with a link to your personal home page, which will make fund- raising efforts simple and fun!
  • Join us on November 14 for a 3-mile walk on the National Mall.

DC Heart 5K

American Classic 5K - Race for Hummanity

Looking for a race that supports a good cause?  Register now for the DC Heart 5K on Sunday, October 18 @ 9AM (starts at Pacers Running Store in Silver Spring, MD).  This is a great race for walkers and runners alike!

Entry fee is $25.  All racers receive a t-shirt.  Race is co-sponsored by DC Road Runners, WUSA-9, and Pacers Running Store.  

Two options for packet pick-up:

1. Pacers (Silver Spring, MD):  Saturday, Oct. 18 before the race

OR

2.  AU, McKinley Building room 153:  Friday, Oct. 17, 9-5 PM
