Associate Dean for the Arts
The College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a position with rank and tenure status open, beginning in Fall 2008. Applicants should hold the appropriate terminal degree in an arts discipline represented at American University (studio art, art history, graphic design, multimedia, theatre/music theatre, music, and arts management). Excellence in teaching and in scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities required. Experience in both academic and professional settings preferred. Demonstrated leadership abilities are required.

Responsibilities include teaching in the academic program, coordination of arts activities, fostering inter- and multi-disciplinary academic and public programs, fundraising and
grants development and oversight of arts facilities.

American University has recently opened new arts facilities, including the 300-seat Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre and the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Center for the Arts, which houses the departments of Art and Performing Arts as well as a 30,000 square-foot museum, a studio theatre, a 200-seat recital hall, classrooms, small and large
rehearsal spaces, a visual resources center, and a music library.

Anthropology
 

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
(TENURE-TRACK)

The Department of Anthropology, American University, seeks an anthropologist to fill a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2008, with a specialization in North American prehistoric or historic archaeology. An Eastern North America/Middle Atlantic specialization is preferred, but exceptional candidates working in other areas will be considered. The successful candidate will play a major role in the department’s public anthropology/ archaeology program, and complement current faculty strengths in Middle Atlantic archaeology, cultural resources management, biological anthropology, and culture, power and history. The Department of Art and the Graphic Design Program invite applications for a one-year temporary position in Graphic Design at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2008. We are seeking candidates who are able to teach a wide variety of courses in the undergraduate graphic design curriculum. Successful candidates should have the potential for excellence in one or more of the following: scholarship, research, professional or creative practice, as well as a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. A MFA or equivalent in Graphic Design is required. Teaching experience required, professional experience preferred. ADJUNCT PROFESSOR
The Department of Literature invites applications for part time, adjuncts for the Fall 2008 semester to teach LIT 160: The Culture of Higher Education in the U.S. This course facilitates new international students' participation in the American University community. Adjunct will work in coordination with other departments and programs on campus including TESOL and International Student and Scholar Services.
Course activities and goals include:
• Compare similarities and differences between US and other academic communities, including classroom styles, faculty/student relations, nonverbal communication, and educational philosophies
• Use a variety of academic resources, including syllabi, faculty, fellow students, and academic support services
• Develop discussion, writing, research, and presentation skills
• Understand US academic integrity
• Understand the cycle of culture shock and models of cultural adaptation
