The School of International Service at American University invites applicants and nominations for the C. W. Lim and Korea Foundation Chair of Korean Studies to begin in Fall 2008. Appointment is at the rank of Full Professor of International Relations with Tenure in the Division of Comparative and Regional Studies of the School of International Service. Responsibilities include teaching courses, conducting research, mentoring students, and presenting public lectures, among others.

Candidates should be established figures in their field and have an excellent record of teaching, research, and public service with an international reputation. A focus on Korean politics and foreign policy, and East Asian International Relations is desirable.

Global Environmental Politics

The School of International Service (SIS) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of assistant professor in the field of Global Environmental Politics. Start date is August 2008.

Global Environmental Politics is one of eight fields within the School of International Service. The field offers a wide range of courses and supports research in environmental affairs in a transnational context. At the undergraduate level, the field provides a foundation in global environmental issues and environmental thought. At the graduate level, the field administers two Masters programs aimed at promoting a more sustainable world: Global Environmental Policy (GEP) and Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRSD), a dual degree program with University for Peace in Costa Rica. Both programs provide advanced study of international environmental policy-making, sustainable development and environmental ethics. Ideal candidates will teach and advise students in both of these programs as well as at the undergraduate level, conduct research in the broad field of global environmental politics, and participate in school and university governance.

We are seeking candidates with practical as well as theoretical expertise in environmental affairs. Candidates’ research may focus on any aspect of global environmental politics. Areas of specialization may include: environment and development; international environmental cooperation; corporate sustainability; transnational environmental justice; global sustainability; and geopolitics of environmental protection.

The School of International Service invites applications for a scholar-practitioner for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in International Development, to begin in Academic Year 2008-2009.

Candidates should:
• Hold a Ph D or equivalent degree, and have a strong record of research and scholarship
• Have significant field/practical experience, with expertise in the Middle East or Central Asia or Eastern Europe strongly preferred
• Be able to design and teach interactive and dynamic courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels that incorporate theory and practice.
• Be interested in teaching a jointly developed multidisciplinary course in micropolitics and/or international development and/or quantitative research methods.
• While we have an interest in courses relating to children, youth and development, we are open to other fields, and new topics and approaches to development.
• Familiarity and experience with some of the following would be an advantage: NGO management, participatory and people-centered methods, grassroots organizations, and social entrepreneurship.

Candidates should specialize in one or more of the following: U.S. foreign policy and/or U.S. national security. Qualifications: PhD or highest equivalent degree in a relevant discipline; record of teaching and research excellence. Policy-relevant experience is desirable. Expertise in the use of new technologies in international affairs teaching desirable.
