Dual Degrees for Graduate Students

One key benefit of the Kogod School of Business is that it allows students to pursue a master's degree from another academic unit at American University at the same time they are completing a business degree. Having developed an expertise in two disciplines, students graduate with a unique set of skills and an extra edge in the competitive job market. Since some courses can count towards both degrees, pursuing a dual degree can reduce the total number of credit hours that would be required for earning both degrees independently.

Kogod offers dual degree programs with the School of International Service and the Washington College of Law. AU's School of International Service is the largest and most applied-to school of international affairs in the U.S. and consistently ranks among the top five such programs. AU's Washington College of Law (WCL) offers top-rated programs in experiential learning, international law, law and government, intellectual property, business, and gender.

JD/MBA

The Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD)/MBA program at the Kogod School of Business provides an excellent opportunity for students who desire to combine skills and develop expertise in both business and law. This program adequately prepares students for virtually any career in either arena.

Because of the unique structure of undergraduate course work and qualifications, students can earn this joint degree in four years. JD/MBA students are enrolled in both Kogod and the Washington College of Law at American University.

Course work includes the MBA fundamentals, including managerial economics, financial accounting, organizational behavior, marketing management, business ethics, financial management, and management information systems. The law curriculum adds a theoretical dimension to the applied and practical study of business.

Graduates of the JD/MBA program are uniquely well positioned for recruitment. They also possess market skills that put them in an excellent position for long-term professional success.

LLM/MBA

Kogod and the Washington College of Law (WCL) offer the first LLM/MBA dual degree program in the United States.  This innovative program offers students the unique opportunity to earn an LLM degree from WCL and an MBA degree from Kogod within two years.  Students develop both the legal and business skills necessary to tackle complex business transactions and to succeed in today's global economy.

Students must begin the joint program as full-time LLM students.  Thereafter, they may take courses at Kogod or WCL.

MA/MBA

The Kogod School of Business and the School of International Service (SIS) jointly offer dual MA/MBA programs.  These programs offer students the opportunity to combine solid business skills with an expertise in international studies - a particularly valuable benefit as businesses adjust to the global market, and international organizations are asked to increase productivity through better business practices.

The MA/MBA requires acceptance by both Kogod and SIS. The MA can be earned in one of the following areas of study:

  • International Affairs

  • International Communication

  • International Development

  • International Peace and Conflict Resolution

  • Global Environmental Policy

  • and an MBA/M.S. in Development Management
