Western news reports detail how the Chinese government is increasing security measures in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwest China, home to many ethnic minority groups, including the Turkic Uyghur people.

Justin M. Jacobs, associate professor of history at American University, is a historian of modern China, and particularly Chinese borderlands.
