Academic Resources for International Students

Several on-campus resources exist to help international students maximize their academic potential.

Academic Support Center

The Academic Support Center has a variety of services for international students, including individual meetings with the counselor for international students, writing assistance in the Writing Lab, English language tutoring referrals, and study skills workshops.

Writing Lab

The Academic Support Center's Writing Lab offers up to 75 hours of appointments weekly with writing counselors who are specially trained to work with international and multilingual students.

Library Reference Staff in Bender Library

Bender Library offers a variety of instructional workshops to support the development of information literacy skills. Students can learn how to do research more effectively using the library's databases and online catalog, how to make proper citations in their writing, how to write a thesis or dissertation, and other such topics. In addition, librarians hold regular office hours for in-depth consultation on individual research questions.

Mathematics & Statistics Tutoring Lab

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers free math and statistics tutoring. The lab is open Sunday through Friday.

Foreign Language Tutoring

The Department of Language and Foreign Studies, through their Language Resource Center, offers free foreign language tutors available for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.

Writing Center

The Department of Literature sponsors a Writing Center, which employs approximately 20 peer writing consultants, some of whom have received training in working with international and multilingual students.

Computer Software Training

The Teaching and Learning Resources Group in the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) offers free technical classes to students on a wide range of topics including Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Endnote, DreamWeaver, Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop, iMovie and others. The CTE Schedule of Classes is available online for AU community members. (Sign-in required.)

Please note: The Writing Center and the Writing Lab are two separate offices providing similar services to all AU students. The Writing Center is located in Battelle Tompkins 228 and the Writing Lab is located at the ASC in Mary Graydon Center 243. If there are no appointments available in one location, please try the other.
