As a qualified individual with a physical, medical, or psychological disability, you should register with DSS as early as possible in advance of when accommodations will be needed. The registration process includes an intake appointment at which time the director will review appropriate documentation of your disability, discuss your specific requests, and identify the range of services that will be provided to accommodate your needs. We encourage you to call or visit our office so that we may get to know you and plan whatever services you may require while a student at AU. Timely requests for accommodations are important since delay may affect the availability of particular services.

Process for Requesting Services Each Semester

If you are a current student registered with Disability Support Services, there is a process you must follow each semester in order to request accommodations and secure services.

Each semester students must complete a Request for Accommodation Letters form. This form can be completed online or by stopping by the DSS office Monday through Friday between 9am-5pm to complete a paper form. A standard letter is prepared for each requested course and the letter includes a list of the student's approved classroom accommodations. Students pick up the letters from the DSS office. Student need to then meet with each faculty member in person to deliver and discuss the letter, preferably during office hours. This process should be completed within the first two weeks of class so that faculty are notified of the need for student accommodations in a timely manner.

Students whose accommodation letters include taking exams with accommodations must complete a test accommodations request form one week prior to each test. Please follow the following link to access the Testing Accommodations Form.

Information about a student's disability and accommodations, if any, is treated as confidential under applicable federal and local laws, and is only provided to individuals who are required to receive such information on a need-to-know basis
