fall 2019 Orientation: august 19

We are delighted that your student has chosen to study at American University to become part of our diverse university community. AU takes pride in attracting international students from about 135 countries! We value the important role you play in supporting your student while studying at AU, and wish to acquaint you with life at the university. On this page you will find useful information and updates about what is happening at AU.

Your student is about to begin an incredible journey. It will begin with International Student Orientation, which covers important immigration, employment, cross-cultural and academic information for international students on August 19.

Families are encouraged to attend orientation with their new students.

Steps for your student before arrival:

  1. They must request immigration documents and pay the SEVIS fee (required of F-1 and J-1 student visas only)
  2. Apply for your new F-1 or J-1 visa
  3. They must activate their AU email account and check it regularly
  4. They must take the Math Placement Test & Register for Classes
  5. Have your student register for orientation
  6. Health Insurance & Immunizations
  7. Help your student prepare their finances: List of Banks in Washington DC; Pay AU Tuition
  8. Help your student get On-Campus Housing
  9. Prepare for Travel
