Welcome!
As a new graduate student, we know you have many questions about AU. This page is designed to provide you with general information about AU.
- Get a Parking Permit: Non-residential students with cars may purchase commuter-parking permits to park in the Nebraska parking lot ONLY. To do so, bring your vehicle registration, student ID and (if you have part-time status) proof of course registration to Transportation Services, located in the Public Safety building. After 5:00 pm, the Nebraska lot becomes open to all vehicles.
- Obtain an ID Card: Submit a photo electronically for your AU Student ID card using the graduate student checklist on the my.american.edu web portal.
- Find a Place to Live:
-
- AU has an online database of available housing in private homes and group houses. Click here to search the database.
- Individuals interested in off campus housing should also check other sources, such as the Washington Post classifieds website or other rental indexes.
- During the summer months, AU offers graduate students temporary housing while they seek off-campus accommodations. For more information, please email the housing office at housing@american.edu.

- Arrange for Health Insurance Coverage: Because health insurance is mandatory for all full-time, residential, or international students, enrollment in the University Health Insurance plan is automatic, unless the student submits a waiver that identifies alternate and comparable coverage. This waiver is available on the graduate student checklist on my.american.edu.
- Familiarize Yourself with the Academic Codes/Policies:
-
- American University follows an Academic Integrity Code that details standards of conduct and violations thereof. Click here to familiarize yourself with the code.
