Peer Wellness Educators

A group of students stand around the Wellness Cabana.

The Peer Wellness Educator (PWE) program is made up of American University undergraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds. Through workshops, tabling, and participation in other events on campus, PWEs are seen as the go-to students for wellness information and resources.

Who can become a PWE?

You don't need to have specialized experience to apply to be in the PWE program. If accepted to the program, you will be trained on presentation skills, as well as a multitude of health and wellness topics (i.e., alcohol and other drug use, sexual health, consent, mental health, stress management, and more). During the year-long program, PWEs develop holistic knowledge about health and wellness, but also have time to focus more deeply on the wellness topics that interest them most. Many of our students return for a second, or even third year.

We will begin recruiting for our next class of Peer Wellness Educators in Spring 2018. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to us at We'd love to meet you and talk about other ways to get involved!

What are the program requirements?

The PWE program is a 1-credit per semester internship in either the Health Promotion (HPRM) department or the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) department.

To fulfill the requirements of the internship, you will be required to complete at least 70 hours of work each semester. Please note that this internship is a full-year commitment and you must be available at the following times in order to be considered:

  • Tuesday, August 15th—Friday, August 18th from 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM each day (TRAINING)
  • Every Wednesday of the fall semester from 3:00 - 5:00 PM (CLASS/MEETING TIME)

Aside from the main work that you would do as a PWE, this program is also a great opportunity for you to build upon your public speaking skills, enhance your interpersonal communication skills, increase your health and wellness knowledge base, meet new students, faculty, and staff across campus, and have fun! It's also excellent experience to add to your resume.
