Important Information for Connecting to AU's Network

New Student Summer 2016 Information Series: Message Five

We hope this e-mail finds you excited about your arrival on campus for the Fall 2016 semester. We are writing to remind you of the security precautions the Office of Information Technology (OIT) has put into place to make your computing experience safer and more reliable, when using AU's network resources. We would also like to take this opportunity to provide some instructions that will make connecting to the AU network faster and easier when you arrive.

To help you maintain a properly updated computer configuration, any computer connected to AU's wired network will automatically undergo a health check through a system known as Safe•Connect, which will verify that the computer is not in a state that could result in disruption to the network or exposure of sensitive information.

The health check system will automatically lead you through the steps necessary to update your computer configuration; however, this process could take a significant amount of time if your computer is not already in a secure state. Note that your computer will not be able to access the Internet or AU applications until all remediation has occurred.

To expedite the remediation process, OIT has produced a detailed set of instructions for users of Microsoft Windows 7, 8, or 10 that, if followed prior to arriving on campus, will greatly reduce the amount of time required to successfully connect to the internet.

The Windows 7 instructions can be found at:

The Windows 8 instructions can be found at:

The Windows 10 instructions can be found at:

OIT strongly encourages all students using Windows 7, 8, or 10 to follow these steps prior to returning to school this Fall. Mac users will only have to go through an abbreviated set of steps when they arrive on campus. Please note that the AU network no longer supports the use of Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. More information can be found at:
