You are here: Confederate Flag Incident - September 2017

On September 26, 2017 after 10 p.m., ten confederate flag posters with cotton stalks attached were found in four places on campus. We believe that it is no coincidence that this incident, a clear act of intimidation, occurred on the evening Dr. Ibram X. Kendi presented his "Vision for Equality" and introduced the Antiracist Research and Policy Center.

American University will not be divided or deterred by this act of cowardice. This incident is another reminder that our community cannot stand by idly and allow those who wish to sow the seeds of fear to operate unchallenged. We stand in full support of Dr. Kendi's mission and are committed to making the AU campus community safe and inclusive.

Unfortunately, incidents such as this are on the rise on campuses across the country, as Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism, discussed recently with the Chronicle of Higher Education.
