|SUBJECT:|| Appointment of Gihan Fernando to the Career Center
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Gihan Fernando as the new Executive Director of the American University Career Center, effective August 1, 2012.
Mr. Fernando has twenty years of experience in higher education administration with a focus on career services. Since January 2001 he has led the Office of Career Services at Georgetown University Law Center and previously held leadership roles at Cornell Law School and New York University School of Law. Mr. Fernando is a nationally recognized leader in his field and has served as the President of the Board of NALP, the Association for Legal Career Professionals.
Mr. Fernando grew up in Africa and Asia and first came to the United States as an international student to attend college. He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Political Economy from Johns Hopkins University and his JD from Georgetown University Law Center. As an undergraduate, Mr. Fernando studied abroad for a year at Oxford University in England. Following his graduation, he held an extended internship with USAID’s office in Colombo, Sri Lanka. After receiving his JD, Mr. Fernando practiced law with a Washington, DC, law firm.
A resident of the Kalorama neighborhood, Mr. Fernando serves on the board of Dakshina, a DC based dance company and appreciates the local performing arts scene as well. He looks forward to joining the AU community and to working collaboratively to ensure that our students achieve their career goals.
