I am pleased to inform you that I have extended the appointment of Interim University Librarian Nancy Davenport for two additional years and named her University Librarian, effective immediately. With this appointment, the Bender Library is now able to move forward with a variety of important long-term plans. The stability resulting from the appointment of a leader with Ms. Davenport’s expertise will well position the library to engage in the essential resource, service, and facility decisions needed to shape the library of tomorrow. With the extent of change occurring in higher education, we are fortunate to attract an administrator so well versed in the critical issues of librarianship and the management of constituent support services.
Nancy Davenport has held several leadership roles in the Library of Congress between 1971 – 2004. She brings extensive experience in library research, acquisitions, and management to AU. Among her many accomplishments include serving on the Executive Board of the American Library Association, the US National Committee for UNESCO, as a Presidential Appointee to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Board of Directors of the National Information Standards Organization, the Board of Directors and President of the Council on Library and Information Resources, and the Board of Trustees of the Digital Library Federation.
As University Librarian, Ms. Davenport will be accorded all of the authority and responsibility associated with the office. The terms of her appointment call for the commencement of a national search for a successor in fall 2014. I have full confidence in the new University Librarian and look forward to a dynamic period for the library.
