I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dean Kay Mussell as Interim senior Vice Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs, effective June 2009.
Back in October, I shared the news that after a decade of service Dean Mussell had decided to step down as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the end of this academic year and begin a long deserved sabbatical. I am delighted to report that Dean Mussell has reconsidered and instead of taking her sabbatical she has agreed to defer and accept my offer to continue as a key player on the Academic Affairs administrative team. Her expertise and knowledge will provide continuity in this critical time as we embark on the implementation of a new Strategic Plan. I am most appreciative of her willingness and enthusiasm to continue to contribute to the academic life at AU.
A lot has been written in the recent past about Dean Mussell’s distinguished academic and administrative career during her tenure at AU. A few of her accomplishments include contributing to the design of the General Education and Honors Programs; developing joint undergraduate program with the Kogod School of Business; expanding foreign language offerings; implementing variable teaching loads; increasing research funding for students and faculty; and overseeing the planning and opening of new arts facilities.
Dr. Mussell has been an outstanding leader and her contributions as a scholar and teacher are significant. We are very grateful for her commitment to the advancement of American University’s goals, I look forward to gaining her advice and wise counsel in the Office of the Provost and I know that you will give your full support to Dean Mussell in her new position.
