I am pleased to announce the interim leadership of the University Library during the transition period while we undertake a national search for a permanent University Librarian.
Nancy Davenport, who served in several leadership capacities in the Library of Congress from 1971-2004, has graciously agreed to serve as Interim University Librarian effective September 4, 2012. Davenport brings extensive experience in library research, acquisitions, and management to AU, and is currently teaching library administration at the University of Maryland in College Park. Among her many accomplishments include serving on the Executive Board of the American Library Association, the US National Committee for UNESCO, as a Presidential Appointee to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Board of Directors of the National Information Standards Organization, the Board of Directors and President of the Council on Library and Information Resources, and the Board of Trustees of the Digital Library Federation. We are fortunate to attract her to AU to lead the University Library during the coming academic year.
Assisting Nancy Davenport during this period is Gwendolyn Reece, the University Library’s current Director of Teaching, Research and Learning Services, who will assume additional responsibilities as the Acting Associate University Librarian effective immediately. Gwendolyn Reece also brings an extensive background in librarianship and will serve an important role in continuity and organizational stability.
I am confident that the combination of internal and external leadership being harnessed will ensure that the Library will be well managed with continued effective services to students and faculty while we search for a new permanent University Librarian.
