Confidentiality of Student Records at American University for Faculty and Staff

All student education records are considered confidential and ordinarily may not be released without written consent of the student. This is not just AU's policy, it is a Federal law (the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974)!

As a member of the faculty or staff, you are required to protect student records that are in your possession or to which you have access. You have been granted access to this information only for legitimate use in the execution of your responsibilities as an American University employee. You may not release or share student records information with third parties- including parents- except under conditions stipulated in the academic regulations on confidentiality of student records.
