Section Title: Israeli Society through the Arts
This course examines Israeli society and its transformations over time using theater, film and other artistic media. It reviews Israel's ideological and political foundations, the centrality of immigration, and Jewish ethnic divisions, as well as the place of its Arab minorities. Taught by a renowned Israeli theater director, actor and screenwriter, the focus is on the various ways in which artistic media have portrayed Israel's complex matrix of social identities. Meets with ISR-396 001.

Section Title: Urban Lives
This course looks at the contradictions of urban life through the lens of those living in cities across America. Through ethnographic readings, students are exposed to topics ranging from the financial districts, the drug subculture, immigrant communities, to the place of music and hip-hop, to gentrification and public housing.

Section Title: Health and Rights in Global Perspective
This course focuses on the centrality of rights in matters of health. It considers when, where, how, and why various notions of rights (e.g., human, reproductive, conjugal, community, nation) collide in health issues and debates. The course focus is global, including both global influences on health and rights, as well as how these issues manifest in different parts of the world. Topics include abortion debates, vaccine movements, control of infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS), as well as others.
