Terrorism, Education and Extremism (3).
This course examines instances and theories of national,
ideological, ethnic, religious, and political extremism and
their relationship to education. Students develop a working
definition of extremism and then analyze how state authorities,
rebel movements, extremist associations, and ethnic and
religious organizations mobilize youth populations, shape public
narratives, and use, manipulate, or abuse ideologies that lay
claim to collective identities during the development and
transformation of extremist movements. The course pays
particular attention to the ways that educational systems have
worked to foment and prevent extremism in comparative,
historical, and cross-national contexts, as well as to efforts
to combat extremism outside of formal educational systems. The
course has a special focus on extremism and hate incidents in
U.S. education. Additional case study material includes Germany
under Nazism and right-wing extremism in contemporary Germany;
child soldiers and education in post-conflict societies; and
education and religious extremism. Meets with EDU-396 002.

Politics of Population (3)
This course introduces students to population studies, which
includes the analysis of population structures and dynamics
overall, as well as the specific study of fertility, mortality,
and migration. In particular, the class reflects on how these
areas have been politicized by various actors at different
points in time around the world. Research on the relationship
between population growth and the environment, the impact of age
structure on security and conflict, the influence of family
planning programs on fertility, the effect of aging on the
economy, and a variety of issues related to international
migration are explored. Meets with SISU-349 002.

Transnational Perspectives on Health and Rights (3)
This course considers--in a global and transnational
perspective--when, where, how, and why issues of health and
matters of rights intersect. It explores the various forms and
meanings of rights across contexts; considers debates--both
historical and contemporary--at the nexus of health and rights;
and examines the role of various institutions that inform and
shape debates about health and rights, from the global (e.g.,
international organizations) to the local (e.g., the family).
The course examines several topics that extend across national
borders and affect people's lives in different parts of the
world, such as rural migrant health, anti-vaccine movements,
global surrogacy and other forms of reproductive technologies,
among others.
