The Club Sport program at American University consists of nearly 600 students in approximately 25 different men's, women's, and co-ed teams.

The Club Sport program promotes student participation in a wide variety of athletic activities, contributes to the development of student leadership and provides a bond between individual clubs. Each club is formed, developed, governed and administered by the student membership of the club working in conjunction with the Club Sport office. Recreational Sports & Fitness assists in the development and growth of each club, the emphasis of the program is on student leadership and involvement. The existence of each sport and the program is dependent upon student interest and participation.

Each club receives a small annual allocation from Recreational Sports & Fitness to help offset the expenses of the club. However, this allocation, at most, funds 50% of the legitimate expenses for the club. The remainder of the expenses for uniforms, equipment, travel, etc. must be subsidized through membership dues, team fundraisers and generous donations from others.
