IC Faculty

Faculty of the International Communication Program represent an exceptionally rich and diverse range of expertise in every dimension of the global communication, ranging from intercultural relations, global media studies, and communication and development, to comparative political economy of information technology, international communication policy, and the global knowledge economy. Faculty are actively engaged in field research in different regions of the world, bringing to the classroom first-hand knowledge and experience of newly emerging issues in the field. IC faculty are therefore deeply familiar with communication issues and problems on the ground in numerous countries and in different cultural contexts. This unique feature of the program, whereby faculty are able to integrate research and teaching, is an exceptional benefit to professional students since it provides opportunities to explore entirely new strategies for a rapidly transforming global communications environment.

IC Faculty Perspectives

Shalini Venturelli
“The development of societies and their relations with one another can be ultimately traced to their knowledge systems—traditions of reasoning, building the knowledge base and learning, innovation, sharing of information in civil society, ability to adopt ideas from elsewhere, and capacity to generate and distribute new ideas. Once we understand this process and can measure it, an entirely different and more hopeful basis of international relations may one day evolve.”
Nanette Levinson
“Focusing on knowledge creation, transfer and use (with a special focus on technology and innovation) in complex, cross-cultural contexts, I work together with my students to craft research that makes a difference. Our program is a vibrant, multidisciplinary 'incubator' that engages directly with the major issues central to our world today. Being a part of this is an extraordinary opportunity!”
Hamid Mowlana
“It is the mode of communication—not in its technical and instrumental forms but in its human-interaction form—that determines the outcome of social processes.”
Eric Novotny
“No other field of human endeavor captures as many dimensions than communication. Global communication is the archive of the human past and holds an important key to the future: War, peace, the sinews of commerce and knowledge, are all linked to international communication.”
David Bachner
“Those of us who teach cross-cultural communication begin with the deeply-held belief that every student has the potential to develop the capacities necessary for effective interaction with other cultures. We then devote ourselves to offering our students the intellectual and behavioral means to realize this potential in their own lives.”
