International Communication Student Forum
The International Communication Student Forum (ICSF) is the student organization of the International Communication Program. The ICSF wants to further the objectives of the IC program by encouraging students to make specialized academic and professional contributions to the field. ICSF is a student-led organization that promotes interaction between students, faculty, alumni and professionals working in the field of international communication. ICSF also creates opportunities for networking and information sharing.
ICSF encourages students to:
- Directly influence the quality of the IC program experience
- Meet and network with other IC students
- Discuss issues relevant to the IC field and studies
- Plan and attend IC related events
The mission and purpose of the ICSF are:
- To defend and promote the social, economic and academic rights of International Communication students
- To increase interaction between the students and faculty of the International Communication Program at American University
- To provide an effective resource for student participation and input into the continuing development of both the general field of International Communication and the specific program in International Communication at American University
- To facilitate the formation of a more coherent identity for students involved in all aspects of this interdisciplinary field
ICSF Newsletter

Katherine Davies, a second year IC graduate student focusing on Intercultural Relations, loves to learn about different cultures. She studied abroad in Querétaro, México as an undergraduate student and recently returned from an American University Alternative Break trip to Colombia. Originally hailing from Tarrytown, NY, Katherine attended Cornell University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Communication. In the past, she has interned for a multicultural marketing company and, this past summer she interned at a research organization in Brussels. Although her research interests are varied, Katherine hopes to write her SRP on intercultural computer-mediated communication (ICCMC), examining communication across cultures in a virtual environment.

Shanti Shoji is a second year IC student focusing on intercultural relations, cross-cultural communications and negotiations, and cultural training programs. Originally from Portland, Oregon, she received her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Japanese from the University of Oregon. After graduating from UO she moved to Japan and worked as an ALT (assistant language teacher) on the JET Program for two years and as the Coordinator of In-Japan Exchange Programs at Labo International Exchange Foundation in Tokyo for three years.

Allison Cash Spiro is a second year IC student from Louisville, Kentucky. Allison has a B.A. degree in French from the University of Louisville. She spent one semester in Montpellier, France going to school at the Université Paul Valery III and living with a host family. Allison also interned in Montpellier, France twice, one summer at the Mayor’s Office of International Relations, and another summer at the Chambre de Metiers (which provides training in trade and small business skills). This spring she will be participating in the AU Grad-level exchange program with Sciences Po in Paris. Allison’s focus in IC is Intercultural Relations. She aspires to work in improving French-American relations on a cross-cultural level in the future.

Brigitte Basile, is a first-year IC student, originally from Virginia, with interests in intercultural relations, cross-cultural training, and migration. In the past, she worked as an non-profit administrator for an international volunteer program focused in Latin American and the Caribbean. As an undergraduate, Brigitte attended the University of Virginia where she studied history and education.
