The MA program in the Department of Government offers students concentrations within the Political Science program in American politics, comparative politics, and applied politics. The Department also offers an MA in Political Communication in conjunction with the AU’s School of Communication.
The American and comparative concentrations expose students to cutting-edge scholarship in their respective fields, with courses taught by leading academics. The applied politics track provides a one-of-a-kind experience for students interested in becoming the leaders and political practitioners of tomorrow, enabling students to experience politics both as a science and a professional practice. Political communication students learn both political and communication theories and practices, drawing on the wealth of personal experience and scholarly achievement of the faculties in both Government and Communications.
The academic experience at American University is heightened by our location in the heart of the nation’s capital. Students find that all of Washington is their classroom, with opportunities to gain experience on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch and on K Street. Through a rich academic curriculum, the unparalleled ability to connect students with experts, and a prime location at the center of the action, the Government Department at American University opens the door to our political system and provides future leaders with the knowledge they need to excel in the political arena.
