Jeff Gill will join American University School of Public Affairs in the Fall as a Distinguished Professor of Government. As part of his role at AU, he will also hold a partial appointment in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and he will be a member of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience in the College of Arts & Sciences. In addition, he will serve as the Inaugural Director at the School of Public Affair’s Center for Data Science, which will coordinate and support empirical research across the campus by developing links with federal agencies, providing research support to faculty and graduate students, and building infrastructure to handle large and complex datasets.

“I am pleased and honored to be returning to American University and I anticipate interesting and productive collaborations with colleagues on campus,” said Gill.

Gill is currently a professor at Washington University, St. Louis where he holds appointments in the Department of Political Science, the Division of Biostatistics, and the Department of Surgery. He previously held appointments at University of California, Davis, Harvard University as a visiting faculty member, the University of Florida, and California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo.

“We are proud that Jeff is returning to American University, where he received his doctorate degree,” said SPA Dean Barbara Romzek. “His expertise and multidisciplinary approach will help lead new research and guide SPA students into the future.”

Gill’s research interests are numerous – ranging from political behavior and institutions to statistical computing, Bayesian inference, blood/circulation, cancer epidemiology and pediatric traumatic brain injury. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and eight books, including his recent "Bayesian Methods: A Social and Behavioral Sciences Approach. Third Edition," published in 2014.

Gill will serve as editor in chief of the journal Political Analysis beginning in the Spring of 2018. He is also a Fellow, and past-President, of the Society for Political Methodology.
