Staff Orientation
During the staff orientation, new staff members will receive information about the history and culture of AU, university policies and procedures, benefits, payroll and training. A campus tour designed specifically for staff members will also be included, as will an orientation to technology at AU. NOTE: This is a mandatory, full-day session for all new full-time staff at the university.

During this half-day session, participants will understand how individual performance contributes to the university’s success. They will learn the steps they need to take to accomplish the three phases of the performance management cycle: planning, managing, and appraising performance. Participants will practice the skills necessary to implement the program and will understand their role in the process. Participants will learn about the staff rewards program and understand how performance based-pay decisions are made.

This is a two hour mandatory briefing for all university staff members on the prevention of workplace discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and sexual harassment, and the promotion of respect for one's colleagues. The course includes a legal update on discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and sexual harassment in the workplace. University policies on discrimination and sexual harassment will be reviewed and the supervisor’s role in maintaining a workplace free of harassment will be discussed.

This course provides the foundation for American University's Service Excellence Program, and is a prerequisite to all other Service Excellence courses. The program is designed for service providers as well as their leaders and includes self-assessments, videos, activities, skill practice, and discussions. Topics include the benefits of creating strong service relationships, key principles for meeting the needs of those to whom we provide service, and ways to manage interactions with individuals who may be dissatisfied with the service they receive.
Back to topPerformance Management Program for Managers
This course is required of all managers at AU. A comprehensive review of the PMP process is detailed with case study and practice through each phase of the performance year. Participants will gain insight and practice annual planning with staff as well as how to monitor incremental progress through the year and deliver coaching sessions and feedback as needed. The session also develops the manager's approach to year in review assessment sessions and the performance based increase process.
Back to topEmployment Policies: What Every Manager Needs to Know
This 2 hour briefing, offered by the HR Employee Relations team, is designed for all managers and covers university employment policies. Topics include the Americans with Disabilities Act, DC Human Rights Law, and the Family and Medical Leave Act, as well as university policies on harassment, affirmative action, and conduct in the workplace. The resolution of workplace issues will also be addressed. The briefing is required of all AU staff who entered a managerial role on or after January 1, 2005.
