Our Purpose Is Helping Students Become Stronger, More Confident Writers

Writing Center

Find us on the first floor of Bender Library!

What Happens in a Writing Center Visit?

  • You’ll meet with another AU student to talk about writing.
  • You’ll share your draft and get feedback about your writing project.
  • You can ask questions and get advice about ways to improve your writing.

"Students prepare papers, we prepare students."

In free, 45-minute consultations, we will work with you on issues such as:

  • Interpreting a writing assignment
  • Generating ideas
  • Locating and sharpening a thesis statement
  • Organizing ideas and research
  • Developing logical arguments
  • Polishing your prose
  • Finding strategies for revising
  • Identifying recurrent errors

Please see our FAQ for more details — and see Writing Consultants if interested in becoming one.

Summer Hours
The Writing Center will re-open May 16 through August 4.

Times TBA.

To arrange a session:
call 202-885-2991
and clearly state your name, phone number, and preferred day. We will return your call on our next business day.*

Sessions start on the hour and last 45 minutes.

Please plan ahead! We cannot work with papers on the day they are due.

*Note: The Writing Center is staffed by students, so we are here only when classes are in session. We are closed during university holidays, winter and spring breaks, and weather-related cancellation of classes.
