By participating in orientation parents and family members will gain insight of campus resources, understand the responsibilities of AU students, and develop a connection to the AU community.

Parent & Family Orientation Programs

Welcome to the AU Community! The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for ensuring that all new students make a smooth transition to the university. We know that your student's successful transition is important to you and that you'll have your own questions and concerns. To meet your needs and help you better support your student, we offer two types of programs, depending on your student's admit status. Registration instructions will be sent to your student.   

Orientation for Parents & Families of First-Year Students

During each summer first-year orientation program, we host a parallel orientation program for parents. You'll have the opportunity to meet with university administrators, learn about the many services offered here at American, and learn about AU's academic programs. By the time orientation is over, you'll feel much more comfortable leaving your student to begin his or her academic career at American University. As one parent put it, "Orientation was first class! Thanks for making us feel welcome. AU is definitely the place to be."

Check-in, in past years, was available from 7:15 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. on the first morning. The program will run until about 8:30 p.m. that evening for parents and families. The second day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude around 4:30 p.m., depending on what you and your student needs to accomplish before leaving campus.

Program Fees:

$85 per Family Member (over the age of 12)
$40 per Family Members (under 12)
$75 for On-Campus Accommodations

Orientation for Parents & Families of Transfer Students

Parents and family members of transfer students are welcome to attend Eagle Summit transfer orientation as well as several separate sessions specifically for families.

Two-Day Program Details:

Check-in, in past years, was available from 7:15 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. on the first morning. The program will run until about 10:00 p.m. that evening. The second day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude around 4:30 p.m., depending on what you need to accomplish before leaving campus.

One-Day Program Details:

Check-in, in past years, was available from 8:00 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the program. It will conclude around 5:00 p.m. that evening.

Two-Day Program Fees:

$85 per Family Member (over the age of 12)
$40 per Family Member (under the age of 12)
$75 for Overnight Accommodations (per night)

One-Day Program Fees:

$40 per Family Member (over the age of 12)
$20 per Family Member (under the age of 12)
