Research Administration Certification Program

The Office of Sponsored Programs, in collaboration with Grants and Contracts Accounting (GCA), is pleased to announce the next year of our Research Administration Certification program at American University. RAC is a comprehensive training and certification program designed to assist AU departmental and school/college level staff with research administration and/or grant/contract management responsibilities. The RAC program provides pertinent information to enable participants to effectively manage sponsored awards.  

The RAC program consists of eight (8) consecutive sessions that will be offered annually throughout academic year (Sept. – May). Each session lasts approximately 2 hours (depending on content), and will include topics covering proposal preparation, research compliance, financial management and reporting, as well as applicable regulations, polices, and guidelines governing sponsored grant and contract awards.  

The following instructor-led sessions will be offered during 2016-17: 

Session 1: Overview of Research Administration (Pre-Award)

Session 2: Proposal Related Issues (Pre-Award)

Date: 10.19.2016

Session 3: Grants Management Pre-Award Issues

Date: 11.17.2016

Time/Location:10:00- 12:00pm/Spring Valley Building 

Session 4: Grants Management Post-Award Issues

Date: 12.07.2016

Time/Location:10:00- 12:00pm/Spring Valley Building RM 318 

Session 5: Financial Management I (Post-Award Policies)

Date: 2.22.2017

Time/Location:10:00- 12:00pm/TBD

Session 6: Financial Management II (Post-Award Procedures)

 Session 7: Systems Overview

In addition, online sessions will be offered as an alternative to the instructor-led sessions, and are ideal for those who need to make up RAC sessions from a previous year. The online sessions also provide individuals who want a "refresher" on a particular RAC session the opportunity to do so. For more details please e-mail jmaher@american.edu

A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of all 8 RAC sessions and required quizzes.

To access the Instructor-Led Sessions:

1-Login into a ASuccessfulU

2-Access the learning module one week after the live session by clicking on the 'Learning' tab from the 'Home' drop down menu

3-In the Search catalog bar, type "RAC" or part of the title of the course(s) you are interested in and hit enter/go

4-In the search results, you will find the available RAC sessions listed individually.

4-Clicking 'View Course Dates' will show the upcoming class time - to register, click the 'Register' link at the right of the screen

5-Click 'Confirm' to confirm your registration

6-Your registration is now confirmed and these courses will now be on your learning plan

To Register for the Online Sessions:

1-Login into ASuccessfulU

2-Access the learning module one week after the live session by clicking on the 'Learning' tab from the 'Home' drop down menu

3-In the Search catalog bar, type "RAC" or part of the title of the course(s) you are interested in and hit enter/go

4-In the search results, you will find the available online sessions listed in this format: 'Online RAC - Session 1' and so forth. You will see within the description the dates in which each online course will be available for viewing.

5-To "pre-register" hover your mouse over the title of the course and

6-Click on 'Add to Learning Plan' or you can view those sessions that are available for taking immediately.

7-You should now see these courses on your learning plan. You will be notified once each online course is available for viewing.

Cayuse 424 Resources and Training

OSP is proud to offer Cayuse 424. Cayuse 424 is a fast, easy-to-use web application created specifically to simplify the creation, review, approval, and electronic submission of grant proposals. By placing all of the necessary proposal forms in a central location, it allows PIs, OSP, and college level research administrators to collaborate in real time, fill in forms with reusable, centrally stored data, and route proposals electronically from anywhere in the world. It also beneficial to those who are new to submitting proposals to a funding agency.
