About the School of International Service

The exterior of the SIS Building

American University’s School of International Service (SIS) is a top-10 school of international affairs located in Washington, D.C. Since our founding in 1957, we have answered President Dwight D. Eisenhower's call to prepare students of international affairs to "wage peace." We do so because we believe the world needs leaders who are ready to serve. Students who come to SIS know that service is not a moment, it's a mindset.

SIS, led by Dean James Goldgeier, is guided by more than 120 full-time faculty. Our world-renowned faculty—leading political scientists, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, demographers, geographers, historians, and experts in international development, global health, communications, energy, and the environment—produce transformational research and prepare more than 3,000 graduate and undergraduate students for global careers in government, nonprofits, and business.

SIS features a comprehensive liberal arts program for undergraduate students, professional training in international affairs for master’s students, including an innovative, live, online degree programs, and a multidisciplinary program for doctoral students.

Our numerous and flexible programs of study offer you a wide range of opportunities that include dual degrees, graduate certificates, online classes, executive degrees, a BA/MA, a three-year BA, a pre-college program, and more.

SIS offers masters programs in foreign policy and national security, international development, global and regional governance, international economics, peace and conflict resolution, ethics and human rights, communications, energy and environment, social enterprise, regional and comparative studies, and more.

As a student, you'll learn core competencies such as research and writing, statistical analysis and research methods, analytics, and economics as you develop regional and functional expertise.

From workshops and practica to professional seminars and skills institutes, SIS students have opportunities to build on and gain new tools to use in your future studies and careers.

Our school’s commitment to sustainability is reinforced through architecture. AU’s beautiful campus and SIS’s spectacular LEED Gold-certified building reflect our commitment to advancing ecological stewardship, fostering transparency and human dignity, and working for social justice.

SIS is a vibrant forum for debates and events, and we frequently host government, NGO, and industry leaders to talk and meet with our students. The school’s relationships with the policy and business worlds and its university partnerships enable you to study abroad, secure internships, and launch successful careers

Thoughtful and aspirational, with wide-ranging backgrounds and experience, our students take advantage of Washington's wealth of resources and professional opportunities—and an active international network of more than 20,000 alumni. As a student here, you will graduate prepared to combine knowledge and practice and to serve the global community as an emerging leader, waging peace and building understanding in our world.
