Jeffrey Rutenbeck

Dean, School of Communication School of Communication

Since joining AU in June of 2012, Jeff has focused his energies on growing the Campaign for SOC and building on established partnerships to expand the Dean's Internships, launch a new Investigative Journalism Practicum with the Washington Post, and join the first DC-area team to enter the DOE Solar Decathlon. Building on experience earned through his prior post as the founding dean of the Division of Communication and Creative Media at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., he has launched an initiative with the College of Arts & Sciences to develop a center for persuasive gaming at AU. While at Champlain, Jeff oversaw growing programs in game design, game art and animation, public relations, broadcast and streaming media, and emergent media (MFA). From 1989-2006 Jeff was a professor and administrator at the University of Denver where, in 1996, he founded the interdisciplinary bachelor’s and master’s programs in Digital Media Studies. His early scholarly work focused on journalism history, and his most recent efforts have explored the technical foundations of the digital revolution and the increasingly complicated technology/society dynamic.
