Each December, eligible students in the School of Communication are sent an email invitation to apply to serve as a SOC Student Commencement Speaker at the May SOC Commencement Ceremony. Two students are typically selected to serve as Student Commencement Speakers: one undergraduate senior and one graduating graduate level student.
All graduate level students, and graduating seniors with a 3.7 cumulative GPA and higher, are eligible to apply. Student applicants must also be eligible to "walk" at the May Commencement Ceremony. This includes students who graduate in August and December the year prior to the May ceremony in question.
Deadline and Selection Process
The deadline to submit an application and speech draft for the May 2014 ceremony is Friday, January 31, 2014 at 5:00 PM. Finalists will be invited to interview (perform their speech) with the SOC Dean and a selection committee the last week of February 2014. Speeches are limited to 3 minutes. All applicants are notified of their status by mid-March.
If you have questions about the SOC Student Commencement Speaker application and selection process, please contact Jill Heitzmann, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Recruitment & Retention, at email@example.com.
