  • Professorial Lecturer Dr. Rebecca Lubin was selected as an Emerging Special Educators of Color awardee at the 2024 Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Special Education Convention and Expo. In May, she will give a presentation, "Brilliant State of Mind: The Methods for Unveiling Archetypes and Aspirations," at the University of Connecticut's 2024 Wallace Research Symposium on Talent Development.   • SOE faculty members Drs. Michael Gibbons, Jisun Jeong, Terence Ngwa, and Elizabeth Worden each gave presentations at the 68th annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society, CIES 2024 - The Power of Protest. Drs. Golnar Abedin and Deepa Srikantaiah served as panelists at the event. [March 20, 2024]

  • Antiracist Pedagogy Scholar Dr. Annice Fisher launched a pilot class of her Exercising Conscious Leadership course at the Cook County Department of Corrections women’s division, where students who completed the sessions received a certificate of completion through her company, Developing Capacity Coaching.   • Adjunct Professorial Lecturer Dr. Tomiko Ball and Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Samantha Cohen co-authored a chapter, "Keeping One Another Charged for an Evolving Antiracist Journey," in the book The IMPACT of the Scholarly Practitioner Doctorate: Developing Socially-Just Leaders to Make Equitable Change. [March 20, 2024]

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Emily Peterson co-wrote a study, "Revising Teacher Candidates’ Beliefs and Knowledge of the Learning Styles Neuromyth," about how to address the myth that students learn best when instruction matches their preferred modality of learning - auditory, visual, kinesthetic, etc. Non-paywall content until April 18. [March 20, 2024]

  • Professor Dr. Bridget Trogden published a paper with the American Society for Engineering Education Conference Proceedings titled, "The Educational Benefits of Operating a Service-Learning Course as a Corporate Structure." It describes how multidisciplinary project-based learning brings about improved student educational outcomes and career competencies. [March 20, 2024]

  • Acting Co-Dean Dr. Rodney Hopson will give the opening remarks at the Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network’s 2024 All In National Summit, themed "Promoting the Value of Adult Literacy," at AU on February 27. [February 27, 2024]

  • Dr. Phelton Moss was a panelist for the Washington Mardi Gras education-themed event, "Voices of Louisiana," which brought together superintendents and policy actors from across Louisiana to discuss education policy. [February 27, 2024]

  • Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Eugene Pringle moderated a panel on the role of culturally relevant messaging and political socialization of HBCU students, “Empowering Voices: Unveiling Insights from 'The Other Black Voter,'" at Rutgers University's Elevate event, a professional development program for early-career faculty members. [February 27, 2024]

  • Dr. Jennifer Steele was named Associate Editor of the Journal for Research on Educational Effectiveness, which publishes multidisciplinary scientific inquiries on educational success and problems, including intervention, evaluation, policies, theory, and methodology. [February 27, 2024]

  • SOE Librarian Hannah Park evaluated illustrated children's books submitted for the 2024 Randolph Caldecott Medal. "The Caldecott" is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished picture book for children published in the US. The 2024 award went to Vashti Harrison, who wrote and illustrated Big, a book about a child's journey to self-acceptance, which also highlights the impact of words. [February 27, 2024]

  • Adjunct Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Altheria Caldera co-edited the book Ourselves in Our Work: Black Women Scholar of Black Girlhood, which highlights how research on and activism focused on Black girls and Black girlhood are engendering the evolving field of Black girlhood studies. [February 27, 2024]

  • SOE Adjunct Professorial Lecturer Dr. Tomiko D. Ball, EdD '22, wrote the chapter, “Proactively Equipping Self and Community with Navigational Tools to Disrupt Othering Within Higher Education,” in the bookHealing While Studying: Reflections and Strategies for Healing, Coping, and Liberation of Graduate Students of Minoritized Identities. [February 27, 2024]

  • Acting Education Policy and Leadership MEd Program Director and Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Phelton Cortez Moss wrote a Diverse: Issues in Higher Education op-ed, "From Classrooms to Ballots: Unpacking the Significance of School Boards in the 2024 Elections," about the high number of uncontested school boards seats in the 2024 elections. [February 27, 2024]

  • Dr. Andre Perry, Scholar-in-Residence, wrote an op-ed for MSNBC, "Navy Federal Credit Union is Getting Heat That the Whole Lending Industry Deserves," about the class action lawsuit accusing the nation's largest credit union of violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.   • Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Eugene Pringle was selected to be the series reviewer for the William H. Sadlier, Inc. publication series Building Reading Success with Wiley Blevins, a module-based intervention program that develops K–5 students’ proficiency in foundational literacy skills. [January 22, 2024]

  • Dr. Carolyn Parker, Hurst Senior Professorial Lecturer, conducted a session, "Problem-Based Learning and the Development of Elementary Education Teacher Candidates,” at the Association of Science Teacher Education's (ASTE) 2024 International Conference. She was elected faculty chair of the ASTE's Women in Science Education (WISE) forum, and SOE EdD student Joytrese George '25, was elected co-chair. WISE is dedicated to sharing and examining issues faced by women in science education. [January 22, 2024]

  • Joytrese George was also awarded a Centering Black Women STEM Educators in Teaching and Learning fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation. [January 22, 2024]

  • Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Amaarah DeCuir gave a talk, "Empowering Leaders to Advance Antiracism in Classrooms and Schools," at the Islamic Society of North America’s 12th West Coast Education Forum. She also participated in the Virtual Dialog to Counter Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Bigotry session at the Communities United Against Hate event. [January 22, 2024]

  • Dr. Antonio Ellis, Senior Professorial Lecturer and Director of the Summer Institute on Education, Equity, and Justice (SIEEJ), was a co-presenter for the session "Just Because You Left Home Doesn't Mean You Left Church: Alumni Perspectives on Spirituality, Identity, and Academic Persistence at HBCUs." The Hawaii International Conference on Education session examined the spiritual journeys of HBCU alumni and the impact on their academic and identity development. [January 22, 2024]

  • Adjunct Instructor Dr. Jasmine Rogers was a recent guest on the Apple podcast Science of Reading.   • Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Antonio Ellis had a scholarship named in his honor by the Alpha Charitable and Scholarship Foundation of Montgomery County, MD, established by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. The Dr. Antonio L. Ellis Diverse Abilities Scholarship will award $1,000 annually to a high school senior with a disability to attend a 2-year trade school or a 4-year university. [December 18, 2023]
  • Dean Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy was a featured panelist for a discussion on concerns about educational equity at the Suburban Schools, Urban Realities: Policy and Possibility on the Urban Fringe Conference, a two-day event at the John Hopkins University Bloomberg Center which convened twenty-five of the nation’s most highly regarded thinkers examining the urban realities of suburban life. [December 18, 2023]
  • Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Moya Malcolm gave the talk, "Our Migration Narrative: How Immigrant Capital Paves a Path to Higher Education for 1.5 Generation Students," at the forty-ninth Annual ASHE (Association for the Study of Higher Education) Conference, which highlighted research from her 2022 dissertation. [December 18, 2023]
  • Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Phelton Moss spoke at the Bowie State University screening event for the documentaryThe Right to Read, which follows Oakland NAACP activist Kareem Weaver, who believes that literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time. Moss also hosted eighth graders from Georgetown Day Middle School at SOE for a policy workshop on affirmative action in higher education. [December 18, 2023]
  • Dr. Deepa Srikantaiah, Adjunct Professorial Lecturer, spoke at AERA's Invited Speaker Series for the Holistic Education SIG 135 event.   • President Biden appointed Elizabeth Ryan, Adjunct Instructor in SOE, to be the new Administrator of OJP’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
