Subject:
Campus Beautification Day & The Talloires Declaration

The 14th annual Campus Beautification Day will be held Tuesday, April 10 (rain date: Wednesday, April 11). During the Campus Beautification Day festivities, we will hold a short signing ceremony to signify AU's adoption of the Talloires Declaration, a 10-point action plan for colleges and universities committed to promoting environmentally responsible behavior in their daily activities. The declaration has been signed by nearly 300 university and college presidents worldwide. Coupled with our biodiesel vehicles, materials recycling, green building design for the new SIS building, arboretum status, and other initiatives, adoption of the Talloires Declaration is an exciting example of our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Please join with students, staff, faculty, and members of Horace Mann Elementary School's kindergarten and second grade, as we work together to enhance the beauty of our campus and prepare it for the large numbers of prospective freshmen and other campus visitors in the coming weeks. You are invited to participate in a variety of projects on the main campus or Tenley campus and at the Brandywine Building, including planting shrubs, flowers, and trees, mulching, or general clean-up. The Beautification Day schedule is:

  • 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Registration, at Mary Graydon Center, Congressional Hall (Tenley Campus), or Brandywine Building
  • 8:00 a.m. to noon: Campus Beautification Day work projects
  • Noon to 2:00 p.m.: Barbecue lunch & Talloires Declaration signing ceremony at Woods-Brown Amphitheater (prize drawing at 1:00 p.m.).

I hope that you will make some time to participate in this community effort that contributes greatly to the beauty of campus. Please contact Mark Feist (ext. 2348) or Katherine Kirlin (ext. 2431) if you have questions.
