This series consists of copies of most of Frederick Law Olmsted’s correspondence and some of his writings. Project staff conducted an international search to create this comprehensive collection. Some of the letters are also available on microfilm. This series includes original letters to and from Olmsted family members (1853-1953 - bulk c.1861-1891) and correspondence to Charles Loring Brace (1853-1891), founder of the Children’s Aid Society and lifelong friend of Frederick Law Olmsted. There is one original letter dated March 15, 1869 from Frederick Law Olmsted to the E. B. Treat and Company. Charlotte Olmsted Kursh, granddaughter of Frederick Law Olmsted, and Helen (Delany) Shirley, a descendent of the Brace family, gave these letters to Charles McLaughlin. This series is arranged chronologically.
