International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation covers important immigration, employment, and cross cultural sessions, as well as academic information specifically of interest to all international students beginning at American University. This program will give you the chance to learn important information for your studies, as well as to meet your new classmates. Families are encouraged to attend orientation with their new students.

January 10, 2024: 

International Student and Scholar Orientation (Virtual)
mandatory for degree-seeking students

January 11, 2024: 

Washington College of Law 

International Accelerator Program Orientation
mandatory for IAP, MAP, ACDC, and Pre-Sessional students

January 12, 2024: 

Washington Semester Program (PM)
Abroad at AU (PM)

Before You Arrive

  1. Request immigration documents and pay SEVIS fee
  2. Apply for your new F-1 or J-1 Visa
  3. Activate your AU email account and check it regularly
  4. Take the Math Placement & Register for Classes
  5. Health Insurance & Immunizations
  6. Prepare your Finances: Pay AU tuition & find banks in Washington, DC
  7. Get your On-Campus Housing. See the First Year Housing Guide provided by Housing & Dining
  8. Prepare for Travel
  9. Complete Immigration Registration e-forms in iEagle
  1. Request immigration documents and pay SEVIS fee
  2. Apply for your new F-1 or J-1 Visa
  3. Activate your AU email account and check it regularly
  4. Contact your Academic Advisor & Register for Classes
  5. Contact your school for departmental orientation
  6. Health Insurance & Immunizations
  7. Prepare your Finances: Pay AU tuition & find banks in Washington, DC
  8. Secure Off-Campus Housing (On-Campus Housing is only available to undergraduate students)
  9. Prepare for Travel
  10. Complete Immigration Registration e-forms in iEagle
  1. Request your American University I-20
  2. Submit a completed Transfer-in e-form via iEagle located under the New Student menu after you log in. 
  3. Activate your AU email account and check it regularly
  4. Take the Math Placement & Register for Classes
  5. Health Insurance & Immunizations
  6. Prepare your Finances: Pay AU tuition & find banks in Washington, DC
  7. Plan for Housing
  8. Prepare for Travel
  9. Complete Immigration Registration e-forms in iEagle
