Teaching Portfolio Requirements AY 23-24

  1. A FULL Teaching Portfolio is required for all tenure-track and tenured faculty for review and promotion, and for term faculty seeking reappointment or continuing appointment with promotion.

The Provost’s Office requires that term faculty submit five items minimum. Additional items or specific guidance may be required at the discretion of your respective deans. Faculty must submit a teaching narrative and SET numerical scores and then choose ONE other item from each of the three remaining evaluation buckets.

  1. REQUIRED: Teaching narrative, as already required in the comprehensive narrative.
  2. REQUIRED: SET numerical scores weighted no more than 50% of portfolio: OIRA will generate SETs summary data for each faculty member going up for continuing appointment or term reappointment dating back a maximum of six years.
  3. REQUIRED: At least one other item from each evaluation bucket listed below, any additional items are optional:

For example, a completed teaching portfolio could consist of the following five items: teaching narrative, SET numerical scores dating back a maximum of six years, annotated syllabus, written review by a colleague of course materials, and narrative portion of SETs for one course per year dating back a maximum of six years.

  1. An ABRIDGED Teaching Portfolio is required for term faculty seeking reappointment and continuing appointment without promotion.

Evaluation Buckets

  • Self-assessment

a) Summary of professional development activities related to teaching, including CTRL events attended

b) Examples of feedback to students such as comments on their work

c) Annotated syllabus with comments on design, purpose of elements, innovation, etc. d) Written self-evaluation of video of teaching a class

e) Written self-evaluation of teaching outside the classroom

  • Peer (faculty) assessment

a) Report written by colleague(s) based on peer observation of “live” or videotaped class b) Review by colleague(s) of course materials

  • Student assessment of teaching other than numerical scores

a) Report based on classroom observation by committee of students not enrolled in the faculty member’s class

b) Results of one or more focus groups of faculty member’s students led by colleague or other

c) Narrative comments portions of SETs for one course per year dating back a maximum of six years
