Teacher Activists and Global Change This course examines the teacher as an agent of change in society. The course looks at historical and contemporary cases of teachers acting individually and collectively to affect change at local, national, and global levels. Teachers play critical roles in mediating broad social forces, such as capitalism, globalization, and war; the course looks at cases where teachers take on explicitly activist identities, engage in individual or collective acts of resistance, and cases in which they promote peace and mediate conflict. Teachers' personal biographies and histories also influence how they embody and ascribe meaning to the role. The course examines how such cultural and political factors motivate teachers to lead and participate in social movements for change. The course also discusses how notions of teaching and learning vary across the world's regions, with emphasis on Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Meets with EDU-596 901.
