Bio
Dr. Guiden Pittman is a Senior Professorial Lecturer in the School of Education. An education historian, Dr. Guiden Pittman, teaches courses on social justice, urban education, and the role of schools in society while emphasizing how race, class, and gender affect education policymaking and school reform efforts. Her research, funded by the Spencer Foundation and the National Academy of Education, investigates racialized assessments of teacher quality and the impact of such on teacher hiring practices.

Before coming to American University, Dr. Guiden Pittman was a Senior Researcher with the American Institutes of Research. She directed research projects on teacher preparation, educator effectiveness, student growth, and diversifying the educator workforce. Dr. Guiden Pittman also led technical assistance efforts for two United States Department of Education-funded national centers and used her expertise to lead professional presentations and facilitate peer-to-peer exchanges among national educational stakeholders and organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Teach for America, among others, to address high-leverage problems such as educator quality and student performance. More recently, Dr. Guiden Pittman was the Senior Partner of the Learning and Development division of Grovider, a knowledge management consulting firm. In her work, she led universities and non-profit organizations in designing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Dr. Guiden Pittman is the author of several book chapters and articles in academic journals. She recently co-authored a book in the Teaching Critical Themes in American History series. The text, Teaching the New Deal, 1932-1941, was written to guide teachers in applying an anti-racist lens when teaching history and social studies and provides critical historical context that highlights the experiences of historically marginalized groups at crucial moments in U.S. history.

In a career spanning two decades, Dr. Guiden Pittman is an award-winning classroom teacher and researcher. She received her Ph.D. in Education from George Mason University, her M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from The University of North Florida, and a B.S. in Elementary Education from Oral Roberts University.
