Carlton Savage Award University Student Achievement Award

Each year, an international student is honored with a University Student Achievement Award, one of AU's highest honors for graduating undergraduates.

The Carlton Savage Award goes to an international student who has contributed the most to increasing intercultural understanding at the University.

Students can be nominated by faculty, staff, or peers. They can also self-nominate. Learn about the nomination process for the Carlton Savage Award and other Student Achievement Awards

Carlton Savage: the Award's Namesake

Carlton Savage (1897-1990) served as a diplomat in the US State Department from 1927 to 1962. He engaged in foreign policy formulation in the years preceding World War II, was part of the US delegation at the conference in San Francisco that established the United Nations, and authored a best-selling book, Peace and War: U.S. Foreign Policy, 1931-1941.

He taught international relations at AU in the 1960s and 1970s, where he shared his first-hand knowledge and worked closely with students to attract outstanding speakers and plan programs promoting international understanding. After his retirement, he remained active as a volunteer advisor to student groups. He was awarded a Presidential Citation from American University in 1973 to honor his inspiring record as a diplomat, teacher, volunteer worker, and loyal friend. The award was established and named in his honor in 1981.
