American University is proud to welcome Cory Peterson as Assistant Vice President of Community and Government Relations. 

In this role, Cory will spearhead AU’s engagement with our neighbors, the broader DC community, and the DC government and help lead AU’s initiative on working with the Washington, DC region as part of AU’s Changemakers for a Changing World strategic plan. 

Cory joins AU from Georgetown University, where he served as the inaugural Director of Neighborhood Life since 2013. In this position, Cory led Georgetown’s efforts to engage with its surrounding community. He played a key role in advancing the work of the Georgetown Community Partnership (GCP) and its efforts related to Georgetown’s Campus Plan. Cory has been widely praised for his impactful and innovative work to strengthen relationships between Georgetown – including its students, faculty, staff, and administration – and its local community through a collaborative, consensus-based, and data-driven approach. Cory also worked closely with local Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) and served as a liaison with several DC government agencies. Previously, Cory worked in a range of other positions at Georgetown, including leadership roles in Georgetown’s Office of Residential Living. 

Cory is also the President-Elect of the International Town Gown Association (ITGA), the leading international organization focused on universities’ relationships with their surrounding communities.

American University's Community Liaison Committee (CLC) will hold a quarterly meeting on Tuesday, February 7. Please RSVP HERE. In addition to regular reports this meeting will include a presentation and opportunity for feedback on the proposed Meltzer Center and SCAN projects.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in rooms 1 and 2 of Constitution Hall on AU’s East Campus. Neighbors are invited to join AU staff at 6:30 p.m. for pre-meeting refreshments and conversation. The CLC was established to foster positive relations and to maintain regular communication between the university and its neighbors. As specified in the D.C. Zoning Commission Order for AU's 10-year Campus Plan, the CLC comprises individuals from neighboring community organizations and representatives from the university.

Members of the community are invited to attend an Information Forum to discuss AU’s proposed Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance Meltzer Center (Meltzer Center) and Sports Center Annex (SCAN) projects on March 2nd at 6:00 pm at Constitution Hall on the East Campus. The Meltzer Center, the first new athletics and recreational facility proposed on campus in more than 30 years, will enhance the development of our student-athletes, ensure their success in and out of competition, and bolster the overall athletic and recreational experience for the entire AU community. The new SCAN will house Well-Being Commons and will prioritize and expand the critical student support services that promote and foster overall well-being. These projects are the first part of the Student Thriving Complex. 

This Information Forum is designed to provide campus and neighborhood stakeholders with an opportunity to review preliminary concept renderings for the projects and to ask questions or voice comments to American University staff on the proposals. Light refreshments will be served.
