American University invites neighbors to its annual Town Hall meeting and reception with President Sylvia M. Burwell on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

The Town Hall will begin at 6:00 in Rooms 1-3 of Constitution Hall on AU's East Campus and is open to the entire community. Free parking for the event will be available in the East Campus surface parking lot, accessible from Nebraska Avenue.

AU recently announced its annual commencement speakers and schedule. An unparalleled roster of dynamic leaders from across business, law, politics, and the arts will address and celebrate 3,400 American University graduates this spring. The speakers include CEOs, a governor, and trailblazing creators who have deep ties to the Washington, D.C. region.

AU schools and colleges will hold their 2023 graduation ceremonies in Bender Arena on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13. The Washington College of Law commencement will take place on Saturday, May 20, also in Bender Arena. The university anticipates increased activity around campus, as families and friends visit for the occasion.

All parking areas on campus will be open for commencement with extra shuttle buses added from the Tenleytown metro and Washington College of Law. All participants have been encouraged to use public transportation and reminded of AU’s Good Neighbor parking policy.

AU Police Department (AUPD) will assist with traffic control at several key locations including the entrances to the Katzen Arts Center and SIS garages.

MADAYIN, the AU Museum’s largest and most critically acclaimed exhibition of the season, will close on May 14. This is the first major exhibition of Aboriginal Australian bark painting in the United States and the largest display of Aboriginal Australian art in the Western Hemisphere in 30 years. Each painting is a story, intended to be handed down from one generation to the next. Vivid and mesmerizing, the designs represent the kinship and interconnectedness between people, plants, animals, fish, water, and the ancestral land itself. Unique to MADAYIN is the involvement of the Aboriginal Yolnu people in the curation and decision-making process of this exhibition. This recognition of Indigenous authority opens the door for Aboriginal Australian people to tell their story of their culture and heritage, creating a new model for curatorial partnership between Indigenous people and Western museums and opening the door for diverse and previously unheard voices in American museums. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at AU offers highly affordable courses throughout the academic year on subjects ranging from politics to poetry, including music, art, science, history, literature, philosophy, and more. Designed for people “50 and better,” nearly 1,600 members are active participants who join for the joy of learning with no tests and no grades. OLLI has two summer sessions: June Minis, which are held once-a-week for four weeks during the month of June; and July Shorts, which meet 2-5 times over the course of one week. Both June Minis and July Shorts are $100 for up to three classes. We are also offering access to a selection of recorded in-person classes as a new membership benefit!
