Assignment of Credit Hours

American University relies on the Carnegie Classification definition for assigning credit hours, which is defined as a minimum of 12.5 hours of direct instruction, accompanied by at least 25 hours of student work outside of class, typically spread over 15 weeks or an equivalent timeframe. Courses are most often structured as 3 credit hours, requiring students to meet in class or online for 2.5 hours a week, with at least 5 hours of additional academic work outside of class. Courses with 4 or 5 credit hours require proportionately more work both in terms of direct instruction hours and hours of weekly academic work. Courses with fewer than 2.5 hours per week for 3 credit hours require students to complete supplementary work to achieve expected learning outcomes. Periodic reviews are conducted to maintain consistency in applying credit hour policies across all course offerings. Academic activities for credit, such as research and internships, must clearly articulate learning objectives, expected outcomes, and workload expectations in line with established standards.
