Tricks, Detection, and Other Non-Miracle Cures: The Challenges of Identifying Generative AI Use
In this workshop, participants will learn about common gotcha-tricks for sniffing out AI use – embedding hidden text in an assignment prompt, using AI-detection tools, etc. Presenters will lead a discussion about the impact and ethics of these strategies, including a focus on why they might not be reliable miracle cures. From there, our discussion will shift to what faculty can do instead, interrogating the idea that all AI use is cheating, and imagining opportunities for assignment redesign. Participants will leave with resources and frameworks for asking questions that will help them revise course materials.
